At the center of the captivating rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His life was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was to care for his herd of rams.

Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind among the single tree on the hilltop were his main associates. Day upon day, looking out for his wards imbued in him a sense of tranquil contentment.

But, there were at times moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.

Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the town. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.

One morning he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.

The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This trick persisted for a couple of more days. However, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, here he went back to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

The tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once lost, is tough to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
